Boston Blackie's Rendezvous (1945)

Boston Blackie films are usually played fairly light though this one, with it's bodycount, has a bit of a darker tone.

Blackie (Chester Morris) is enlisted to help a friend whose nephew Jimmy (Steve Cochrane) has escaped from the asylum. Soon Blackie is face to face with Jimmy and discovers that Jimmy is obsessed with a young woman, and is also homicidally dangerous! 

Jimmy kills a friend of the woman he is obsessed with, naturally Blackie's nemesis Farraday (Richard Lane) thinks Blackie has killed the woman. Blackie must try and save Sally (Nina Foch) who is now a prisoner of Jimmy and keep out of Farraday's clutches...

With two women killed and another in deadly peril, the usual Blackie and Runt (George E Stone) antics can sometimes jar a bit, especially when they go blackface! This is an enjoyable, if complicated, crime romp. The character of Jimmy brings plenty of menace.

Sky Heist (1975)

A classic TV movie about an audacious crime, and the hunt for gold and criminals by the LAPD air department.

An LAPD helicopter piloted by Trumbell (Don Meredith) is hijacked, the pair of hijackers wanting $100K in cash. Unbeknownst to police captain Ballard (Joseph Campanella) this is all a diversion. The criminal gang have really hijacked a plane carrying gold bullion and now have $10 million in gold bars on a disguised bus! Ballard, Trumbell and company have to try and unpick the complicated (though flawed - see below) plan by Hardings (Frank Gorshin) before it's too late...

This film just screams pilot for a planned TV series, which unfortunately was never made, which is a shame as it probably would have been pretty good. The story is straight forward, characterisation laid on hard and fast (though the characters are largely well-worn stereotypes) and the action exciting with many helicopter shots if pretty bloodless. 

Harding's heist plan is mostly well worked out and even quite ingenious though you will wonder why they didn't switch the gold from the bus to another vehicle. Though as a police detective once said, if criminals never did anything stupid then the police would hardly ever catch anyone!

The Bubble (1966)

Given the time period for the sci-fi genre, and the fact the film was originally shown in 3-D, you might think this film could be awful cheese... but actually it is a surprisingly good film.

Mark (Michael Cole) and Catherine (Deborah Walley) are trying to get to a hospital before Catherine gives birth. Their private plane is caught up in a strange storm and lands in a mysterious small town. Everyone in the town seems to act like zombies, repeating the same lines and the same actions over and over again and living in a trance. 

Together with their pilot Tony (Johnny Desmond) they try to escape the town but find it is surrounded by a clear impenetrable barrier. Every seven days a mysterious light in the sky plucks someone to an uncertain but likely to be unpleasant fate up into the heavens above...

The film builds a creepy and mysterious world slowly. We don't really see the aliens (apart from perhaps in one scene) but their presence is everywhere. The leads do well in portraying a growing sense of eerie unease and paranoia. Much remains unanswered but thats no bad thing with a film like this.

The Woman Condemned (1934)

A decent if confusing crime drama that ends with an enjoyable twist.

Radio star Jane (Lola Lane) goes missing after some menacing phone calls, private investigator Barbara (Claudia Dell) is arrested after breaking into her apartment looking for clues. At court reporter Jerry (Richard Hemingway) gets interested in the case, or rather interested in Barbara, and ends up getting married to her there and then! Next however Barbara is arrested for Jane's murder, she does not seem to want to help herself or get Jerry's help on anything.

Jerry finds a phone number which leads to a private hospital where the mysterious Dr Wagner (Mischa Auer) is a plastic surgeon, and Jane is alive and well as Dr Wagner was removing a birth mark from her face. So, who is the dead woman, and what exactly is going on?

It is rather confusing though the plot has some interesting aspects, the conclusion is satisfying even if getting there is a rather choppy ride.

North Sea Hijack (1980)

The tension builds and builds in this slightly eccentric action tale.

Criminals led by Kramer (Anthony Perkins) seize an oil rig tender in the North Sea and hook up explosives to two rigs, they want millions in cash or there is going to be a rather large explosion. Admiral Brinsden (James Mason) is to negotiate with the criminals, though his assistant ffolkes (Roger Moore) is really an expert in anti-terrorist operations at sea and his team are planning an attack...

The film has a great set-up though you have to wait a long time for the big action set-piece (which probably isn't that big after all). It is worth the wait though as the tension is built up very well thoughout. Ffolkes character is superbly odd (and very unlike Moore's Bond in many ways) and adds a great deal of interest to this otherwise fairly straight forward tale.

The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (1976)

The Gaulish comic hero reaches the big screen, with good effect, by Toutatis!

Julius Caesar's Roman legions have conquered Gaul, well all except a small village which is holding out against the might of Rome thanks to a magic potion created by their druid. This allows the villagers, especially our heroes Asterix and Obelix to defeat Roman attacks time and time again thanks to the super strength granted by the magic potion.

Caesar tires of the Gauls, whom some Romans call gods, and challenges them to twelve tasks a la Hercules. If Asterix and Obelix can complete all of the tasks then Caesar will surrender, if they fail then the villagers will become Rome's slaves...

This is a fun adaptation of the indomitable Gauls which stays true to the storyline on the whole and is very entertaining. An inventive story, i especially liked the bureaucratic task. Voice actors in the English version include Sean Barrett and Michael Kilgarriff and they do an excellent job. 

Candles at Nine (1944)

A sometimes silly but interesting crime drama.

An old rich man (Eliot Makeham), who in the best traditions of the movies is mean and spiteful, is about to announce who is the sole beneficiary in his will to his assembled family and staff. However, he dies in mysterious circumstances before he can tell them. When his will be revealed, everyone is shocked to find young actress Dorothea Capper (Jessie Matthews) is not only his niece but also gets everything!

This enrages the old man's maid (Beatrix Lehmann) who wants the money for herself. She first tries to intimidate Dorothea out of claiming her inheritance then, when that fails, plans to kill her. Luckily Dorothea has an ex-detective (John Stewart) on hand to help and advise her...

A fun little film that doesn't take itself seriously, indeed at times it resembles a bit of a send-up of the mystery house genre. The light antics can be taken a little too far and the film does include a song and dance routine (which is mercifully brief). A decent and well flowing film if sometimes a bit annoying. Look-out for Patricia Hayes in one of her earliest roles.

Carry on Spying (1964)

The dark and dangerous world of international espionage... for laughs.

STENCH (Society for the Total Extinction of Non-Conforming Humans) have stolen a top secret chemical formula. Unfortunately the only agent available to try and retrieve the formula is bumbling Simpkins (Kenneth Williams) and his three trainees (Barbaras Windsor, Charles Hawtrey and Bernard Cribbins). The four are sent to Vienna to look for the STENCH agents Fat Man and the Milk Man and link up with Carstairs (Jim Dale) to help, unfortunately they prove much more of a hinderance than a help!

Following more hijinks in Algiers and on a train, the four agents end up with the formula but also prisoners of STENCH and the evil Dr Crow (Judith Furse). Can they somehow save the day and foil the evil STENCH?

This is a great send-up of the 1960s spy genre, its packed full of satirical references to other films and TV series. It also has the usual double entrendres, campy humour and a bit of sauce. Not quite the best Carry On film, it lacks the energy and slapstick of the series at it's height, but certainly a good film and pretty funny.

The Witness Vanishes (1939)

An enjoyable crime drama, if a bit predictable.

Years before newspaper owner Marplay (Barlowe Borland) was put in a lunatic asylum by four men who took over his newspaper. Now he has escaped and has vowed to kill the four men. Indeed, the obituary of each man appears in the paper before the murder takes place! 

Investigating what is going on is Marplay's daughter Joan (Wendy Barrie) and the rather suspicious private detective McNab (Forrester Harvey). The last of the four men left alive, Peters (Edmund Lowe) does not seem to be that perturbed by his supposedly impending death...

An interesting film with "improbable" murders which leave the police baffled. A seasoned crime film watcher (or novel reader) will probably guess what is going on and who is really behind things but it doesn't stop the film being well worth watching.

Frankenstein's Daughter (1958)

Frankenstein's monster becomes female, not that you can really tell.

The grandson of Frankenstein, Oliver Frank (Donald Murphy) is now living in 1950s USA. Working with an unsuspecting Professor Morton (Felix Locher), he is conducting his deranged experiments at night. He kills Suzie (Sally Todd) after a date which goes sour and uses her brain to finish his new creation. Meanwhile he is also after the heart of of the Professor's daughter Trudy (Sandra Knight) though she is not that keen on this ridiculously creepy man, especially when his monster shows up. She is keener on Johnny (John Ashley) though he does take her to parties with some dodgy pop groups playing...

This is a basic retelling of the Frankenstein story set in the rock and roll era but isn't very good. It has a few thrills but most of the monster scenes are more ridiculous than anything else. 

Despite the monster was supposed to be female it didn't look very feminine. The makeup artist didn't know the monster was supposed to be female when he created the mask. So, he applied some lipstick to the mask! Job done?

A Few Moments with Eddie Cantor (1923)

While the Jazz Singer in 1927 became the first full-length feature film to have lip-synched sound and music, there were earlier films released experimenting with sound and this is one of the earliest.

The Phonofilm method of recording sound onto film was developed in the early 1920s and used to make a number of short demonstration films. Ultimately however, Hollywood chose other methods for recording sound (Vitaphone being used for the Jazz Singer) and Phonofilm faded into obscurity. Two hundred films were made and like this one are now of considerable historical value and interest.

This film was recorded in early 1923 and includes vaudeville performer Eddie Cantor who would go on to having a long career on the stage, radio and appear in quite a few films (even some TV at the end). In this film he tells some jokes and sings a couple of songs. There isn't much to it, he just stands there and performs but its a fine and fascinating short film.

Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977)

The last of the Confessions series, either completely hilarious or utterly dated drivel depending on your point of view.

Timmy (Robin Askwith) and his brother-in-law Sidney (Anthony Booth) are still at it, "it" being sleeping with as many young women as possible. They are now working at a grim holiday camp, obviously this gives them plenty of opportunities. 

But then the camp is taking over by Whitemonk (John Junkin), a former prison governor, who thinks a holiday camp should be run using iron discipline. Naturally he disapproves of Timmy and Sidney. However, Sidney has the great idea of holiday a beauty contest...

This film is crude, sexist and vulgar. The humour is dated, obvious and repetitive. I loved it. This is one of the funniest films around. It is one of the final glorious examples of British saucy comedy and working class culture that was soon to be swept away by the uncertainty of the 1980s, enjoy (a bit of) it while you can.

Mystery Broadcast (1943)

An enjoyable amateur detective romp.

Jan (Ruth Terry) has a radio show where she dramatises unsolved crimes, unfortunately the ratings are on the downward trend so she decided to try and solve one of these unsolved crimes! The crime she sets out to solve is a murder, this seems to rattle some feathers including people working on her radio show. When these people start winding up dead she knows she is onto something for sure!

She is helped by rival radio presenter Michael (Frank Albertson) and her long suffering effects producer Smitty (Mary Treen). Along the way they encounter a number of suspicious characters and dangerous situations...

This is a great little crime drama though not that original. It is a perky little adventure that flows smoothly from situation to situation driven by the great performances of Terry and Treen. The resolution is a little sudden and relies on the old trick of the culprit unmasking himself. The workings of live radio are well portrayed and always interesting.

Deluge (1933)

One of the earliest examples of the disaster movie genre, and the norm with these films often having impressive visuals but a disappointing story seems to have been there from the start.

A combination of a massive earthquake and huge storm strikes the USA at the same time, destroying basically everything. We see the skyscrapers of New York collapse with the population fleeing in terror. As usual the massive disaster is personalised through the lives and struggles of a few ordinary people. Those being Martin Webster (Sidney Blackmer) and his wife (Lois Webster) and children. Martin is separated from them after the main disaster strikes. 

Martin spends time alone, not knowing if anyone else survived. Then he discovers Claire (Peggy Shannon) who has escaped from a rough gang led by Jepson (Fred Kohler)...

This isn't that great a film, the acting is rather stilted and the film takes a long time to get going. The effects are good though especially for their day. The film also includes an interesting surprise for Martin and a rather awkward situation. An interesting watch but not much more.

Soldier's Fortune (1991)

Somehow a violent tale of mercenaries and kidnap ends up being a bit dull.

After the daughter Jennifer (Cindy Guyer) of rich businesswoman Susan (Barbara Bingham) is kidnapped by armed men, Susan calls on her ex-husband (and Jennifer's father) for help... Robert Jones (Gil Gerard) happens to be a mercenary! Jones recruits some of his former buddies who are of course a motley crew of military stereotypes!

Jones' efforts to deal with the kidnappers do not go smoothly, due to an inside woman feeding them information but the stage is set for a showdown at the docks...

Apart from a few decent action set pieces, a lot of this film is pretty pedestrian where not a huge amount is going on. The film also does not do much with the main baddie (Charles Napier) until the end, an old enemy of Jones though this isn't really mentioned much in the earlier part of the film.

The Day the Sky Exploded (1958)

One of the earliest Italian science-fiction movies and truly isn't that good.

McLaren (Paul Hubschmid) is chosen to be the first astronaut into outer space in a multi-national mission. The launch goes as planned but soon disaster strikes and asteroids are sent hurtling towards the Earth causing disasters all over the world! 

The only way the world can be saved is by the West and the Soviets working together and using their nuclear arsenals for good...

The movie has some good ideas, and some of the plot points will re-appear in later films. However, this is all rather odd and poorly made and the poor special effects (though fairly standard for the time) are overly padded out with stock footage. The film is what it is, and is worth watching for the curiosity value and for the plot being quite novel in many ways.

After Midnight with Boston Blackie (1943)

Boston Blackie gets involved with the hunt for missing diamonds.

Ed Barnaby (Walter Baldwin) leaves prison after the theft of diamonds which were never recovered. He knows the mob will be after him and the loot so sends his daughter Betty (Ann Savage) to enlist the help of his old pal Boston Blackie (Chester Morris). Herschel (Cy Kendall) and his thugs end up killing Ed and then kidnapping Betty in order to force Blackie to give them the diamonds. Hapless Police Inspector Farraday (Richard Lane) as, as always, a few steps behind.

This is another fast moving, rich yet straight forwardly plotted, crime romp with plenty of good humour including a side-plot of The Runt (George E Stone) trying to get married. A highly enjoyable film.

The Brain Machine (1972)

Confusing and with a low budget, this is probably not going to go very well.

A group of people (including James Best as a priest) are selected to take part in a mysterious experiment led by Dr Roth (Doug Collins), the purpose of this experiment is never made clear but the fact the previous head of the programme ran away and ended up being executed by government agents does not bode well. 

During the experiment the patients are trapped in a room and then things take a turn for the worse, as the experiment is hijacked by secretive government agents. The patients are driven crazy, and in some cases want to kill...

The film does not make much sense, it probably needed a good edit and a bit of clarity in the plot. The paranoia builds nicely though and psychological terror in the last act is quite effective though but it takes a deal of tedium and many static shots of a swimming pool (for some unexplained reason) to get there. The IBM computer equipment is probably the real star of the film (for me anyway).

Light Blast (1985)

An insanely violent 1980s crime/science fiction film.

Dr Soboda (Ennio Girolami) is a renegrade scientist who has developed a death ray. He uses it to blow up a train and melt the unfortunate couple getting it on inside a boxcar. Soboda wants millions of dollars from the San Francisco authorities otherwise he will use his death ray again. He indeed does use this at a race track to deadly effect.

Supercop Inspector Ronn (Erik Estrada) is tasked with stopping Soboda. His investigations consists of getting into a string of fights including in a morgue! In fact there are a lot of fights in this, many many fights and many many deaths.

This is a fun 1980s action romp, full of stunts and action scenes and doesn't make a lot of sense. Not a film for character development, much in the way of plot or any logic. But the film is highly enjoyable as a mindless action romp so who cares?

Charlie Chan on Broadway (1937)

Charlie Chan against the glamour and sleaze of Broadway.

Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) and Number 1 Son (Keye Luke) are travelling to New York via ocean liner, also aboard is Billie Bronson (Louise Henry) who is returning from exile. Someone seems to be very interesting in getting their hands on something in her possession for sure as her cabin has been ransacked. It is discovered that Billie has information on her which could blow open a criminal racket in the city.

In New York, Billie heads to a club to confront owner Burke (Douglas Fowley) but is later found dead in his office. A man is later found dead in her hotel room. Charlie and the police (Harold Huber) try to discover who is behind the crimes, reporters Joan (Joan Marsh) and Speed (Donald Woods) are also close behind. Maybe too close?

This is a fine entry in the Charlie Chan series, with plenty of clues, red herrings and potential suspects. The actual culprit turns out to be a bit of a surprise too. The rather dubious night club where male patrons can take photographs of the girls dancing is hilarious.

Thief (1981)

A gritty crime drama on the mean streets of early 1980s Chicago.

Frank (James Caen) is a successful safe breaker but he always works for himself. Unfortunately when he crosses paths with the mob led by Leo (Robert Prosky) and is forced to work for him instead. 

Life is going well for Frank though, he is married to Jessie (Tuesday Welt), has a nice house and an adopted child (which Leo arranged). The big diamond heist in California goes well but when Frank wants to quit, Leo doesn't take no for an answer. To escape, Frank has to put everything at risk...

A highly enjoyable film and involving film, especially the safe cracking scenes. Appearances by Jim Belushi and Willie Nelson are also very welcome.

The Cosmic Man (1959)

An interesting, if well worn, sci-fi tale. The story has been seen before, usually with a bigger budget!

A mysterious globe arrives on Earth near a US military base. Dr Sorensen (Bruce Bennett) is tasked with trying to discover what this globe is and if it contains any secrets which can help the US military. Colonel Matthews (Paul Langton) becomes impatient as Sorensen and his team continue their painstaking investigation. Meanwhile, a mysterious shadowy figure begins to terrorise the local town. A mysterious man (John Carradine) also makes an appearance and shows a lot of interest in what is going on...

This is a perfectly reasonable science fiction tale, the story of a visitor arriving from outer space is of course very familiar. This film lacks any whizz bang special effects though can be a little more thoughtful than films of this genre at the time often were. It does lack much in the way of any real excitement or drama but is a decent watch. 

One A.M. (1916)

An early Charlie Chapin short comedy, the first in which he appears (mostly) alone.

A drunk (Chaplin) returns home from some sort of event which included booze, indeed a lot of booze as Charlie is very drunk indeed! After many awkward slapstick antics he manages to get out of his taxi allowing Albert Austin to finally drive off. Charlie's next job is to get into his house...

Well we have all been there! This is solo slapstick of the highest order as everything becomes a near insurmountable obstacle to negotiate past. A short and simple film which just about manages to not out live it's welcome. Don't ask why the film is called "One A.M." yet it is bright sunlight outside!
