Counterspy Meets Scotland Yard (1950)

An excellent early Cold War spy drama.

After a US agent working at a top secret missile test site mysteriously dies, spy chief Harding (Howard St John) suspects there is a foreign spy ring after US secrets. British agent Langton (Ron Randell) begins to work at the test site to seek out the spies.

The base secretary Karen (Amanda Blake) comes under suspicion, especially as she has regular meetings with Dr Gilbert (Lewis Martin)...

This is a good film with some interesting scenes, some spy drama brutality and an exploration of the art of international espionage. The spies' identities are kept ambiguous, quite possibly neo-Nazis instead of the Soviets. The post-war paranoia is high, the film is also interesting in using Karen's concentration camp survival as a plot point.

240-Robert (1979)

A feature length pilot for a series about the Los Angeles rescue team (which ran for two seasons).

Deputies Trap (John Perry) and Thib (Mark Harmon) work with the LA sheriff department's rescue team of highly skilled officers who can rescue people underwater, down mountains, perform emergency medical treatment and even arrest people!

A new helicopter pilot (Joanna Cassidy) joins the team, Trap doesn't seem to like her because she's a girl (and apparently an ex). However, she proves herself and earns Trap's respect by the end of the film, and they all go home happily for tea.

It is all pretty predictable, but well made and enjoyable. We see a series of rescues which do not have much in the way of suspense and tension until the final act when the team are called upon to rescue two people who crashed their car down some cliffs. There isn't a great deal of back story for the characters, the film concentrating on their professionalism and skills instead of any dark secrets or hidden demons they may have. That is fine with me to be honest!

The Brasher Doubloon (1947)

A tasty Marlow case and a decent slice of 1940s Noir.

Private detective Philip Marlow (George Montgomery) is employed by Mrs Murdoch (Florence Bates) to recover a valuable doubloon (which is a coin) which has found it's way into an unscrupulous dealer. Marlow isn't employed to find out who stole the coin though (as only Mrs Murdoch, her wayward son Leslie (Conrad Janis) and the somewhat erratic assistant Merle (Nancy Guild) have access to the safe so it would be a pretty simple investigation), rather he must get the coin back.

But Marlow's investigation is soon getting him involved with shady gangland characters in bad suits, and more than one stiff. Marlow gets interested in Merle but she has some unknown psychological issues, and is being blackmailed by a cameraman...

This is a highly enjoyable film with a tough(ish) and cynical Noir feel. It can be a bit corny but is great fun.

Riding the Edge (1989)

A bit cheesy, it is the 1980s after all, but also a pretty good film.

John Harman (Lyman Ward) is working on a top secret solar energy project in the Sahara. His facility is raided by terrorists who want the revolutionary chip that will change the world. The terrorists want the chips in return for John's safety. They also want his son Matt (Raphael Sbarge) to deliver the chips to them. So begins Matt's adventure who quickly wants to go his own way as he doesn't trust the authorities. He gets help from Maggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) - who just happens to be travelling the desert in a white jeep...

This is a great film underpinned by a straight forward plot and drips with 1980s cheese. The only drawback of the film is the character of Matt who can be unbelievably naive at times, he seems genuinely shocked when Maggie turns out to be a US agent and not a young white woman taking a joy ride across Libya. However, he does have the good luck to find people who speak excellent English no matter how remote he gets in the desert!

It is a fun film with some good action scenes, recommended.

Torchy Gets Her Man (1938)

A lovely breezy little crime drama, you will have seen it before but not always as well done as this.

A federal agent (William Robertson) arrives at the police HQ after the notorious counterfeiter "100 Dollar" Bill Bailey. Unbeknownst to Detective Steve (Barton MacLane) and the other police, the agent is the real Bill Bailey and has concocted a complicated plan to trick the police into helping him make a killing.

Steve's reporter girlfriend Torchy (Glenda Farrell) is after a story though but her unauthorised investigations soon put her in harms way...

This is part of the Torchy series and is a bright (ahem) and fast moving crime drama. It is very cosy, quite fun but sometimes a little too silly. The character ensemble is a bit too goofy at times but this is a solid and enjoyable little film.

Death Journey (1976)

The first in a series of blaxploitation films about ex-cop Jesse Crowder, OK but seems to lack a certain something.

Jesse Crowder (Fred Williamson) is hired to escort star witness Finley (Bernie Kuby) from Los Angeles to New York for the trial of a mobster boss. Now of course the simple way would be to just take a flight but instead Crowder decides to drive across the US.

Almost immediately the mob are after his ass in a seemingly endless series of fights with hapless henchmen. Somehow Jesse manages to get Finley safely across the US, and bed a series of young women (of course!)

The film is what it is, a decent action film with a series of action set pieces and competent if not overly ambitious action choreography. The film is enjoyable, not brilliant. It could do with a bit more pizazz, maybe a bit more 1970s cheese.

Boston Blackie's Chinese Venture (1949)

The fourteenth and final film in the Colombia Boston Blackie series, and another fun tale.

Boston Blackie (Chester Morris) is an obvious murder suspect after the proprietor of a laundry is found dead just after Blackie was seen leaving the premises. However, as Blackie begins to investigate the crime (well officially Inspector Farraday (Richard Lane) is investigating the crime but of course Blackie is the one who does it really!) he begins to uncover an incredibly complicated conspiracy involving smuggled diamonds, fake tours of Chinatown and a movie theatre...

So, this is a fine film with a complicated fast moving plot which packs a lot into an hour long run time. It maybe tries to pack in a little too much perhaps. The fake tour of Chinatown with it's staged "Oriental intrigues" is hilarious.

Round Numbers (1992)

A strange little drama set in the diet industry, insert weight loss related pun here.

Judith (Kate Mulgrew) suspects her husband is cheating on her with a model (Hope Marie Carlton) at the local health spa. She decides to go to the spa and see what is going on, confront the model and gain some revenge. However, she finds the spa a bizarre cult-like organisation packed full of strange characters and an endless and unfulfilled desire to be "better" by the inmates. Judith's desire for revenge changes to something else...

A satire on the obsession with the body beautiful though you may find this film rather slim pickings. It is a pleasant enough watch, though the social commentary is rather skin deep and could have done with some bulking up.

If you are a fan of Kate Mulgrew you will enjoy seeing her in this Earth bound film though others may need to weigh up whether this film is for them or not.

Murder in Greenwich Village (1937)

A rather messy and confusing murder mystery.

Advertising photographer Steve Jackson (Richard Arlen) spies a young woman in her underwear jumping off a fire escape. The woman, Kay (Fay Wray) is a heiress, who accepts Steve's help though won't say much about what she was doing.

Later on it transpires that an artist in the apartment Kay was seen escaping from is found dead. While the police are sniffing around Steve and Kay pretend they are engaged (despite a more hate-hate than love-hate relationship). Meanwhile the brother of the dead artist, Morgan (Marc Lawrence), a gangster, is also looking for the murderer of his brother, and he doesn't intend to take any prisoners...

So, this sounds like a promising murder / crime drama. Unfortunately it is not, the film is stuffed full of eccentric characters and is more comedy than crime drama. The actual crime indeed does not seem to be that important for most of the film! The film is watchable though frustrating.

It (1927)

The film that turned Clara Bow into a superstar and created the concept of the "It girl", but is it any good?

What is "It"? A concept beyond beauty, a quality that draws people to them, a charisma that people find irresistible.

Shop girl Betty (Bow) has a crush on her handsome boss Cyrus (Antonio Moreno). Unfortunately Cyrus is engaged to Adela (Jacqueline Gadson) who is in his social class while Betty is not of course. Betty finally gets Cyrus to take her on a date, to the joys of Coney Island! Cyrus falls in love with Betty (who has It!) but circumstances throw some hefty obstacles in the way of true love...

So, an important film and it is indeed very enjoyable, after all Clara Bow was the It girl and had a magnetic quality on screen. The story is light and fast paced, the comedy is fine if a little too cute at times. Without Clara the film probably wouldn't have worked quite as well but thats why some are stars and most are not.

The Wizard of Mars (1965)

A rather plodding science-fiction tale, saved by some lovely visuals.

Steve (Roger Gentry) is leading a mission to Mars. The mission runs into trouble when it reaches the red planet and crashes. The crew of four are stuck on the planet and only have a few days oxygen supply left. They find Mars barren except for a few bizarre monsters.

Finally, they find a cavern inhabited by a Martian collective conscienceness in the form of the Martian Wizard (John Carradine)...

The film is all rather slow though pretty atmospheric. This isn't a standard 1960s science-fiction film, indeed it is all rather psychedelic and at times pretty inventive though it is also a bit dull. Not a great deal happens and the characters are rather annoying. It isn't great and unfortunately isn't terrible enough to be truly entertaining!

The City (1977)

A basic but enjoyable crime drama starring two actors who would soon be huge names.

Troubled youth Eugene (Mark Hamill) snaps after receiving a letter and commits the first of a number of murders and attempted murders. This sets him off on a hunt for country music star Wes Collins (Jimmy Dean) whom Eugene thinks is his father (as the letter tells him, not actually true), and who battered him as a baby (this bit is actually true!) Hunting for Eugene are detectives Lewis (Robert Forester) and Scott (Don Johnson). The hunt is personal for Lewis as Eugene's second kill was Lewis' partner Burt (Paul Cavonis)...

The plot of this TV movie is fairly straight forward, as the identity of the felon is known early on so it is a man hunt rather than a detective film. It is well structured and paced (basically feels a feature length episode of a detective TV show) and keeps your interest having plenty of action. This film was released a few months before another Mark Hamill film that did quite well at the box office, Star Wars...

The Wall Street Mystery (1931)

Part of the Carr & Crabtree crime series, and a very decent little tale in less than twenty minutes!

Two stock brokers are found dead in their office. Inspector Carr (John Hamilton) and his friend Dr Crabtree (Donald Meek) investigate, deducing that the crime in a double murder not murder-suicide. There are two suspects, Dorothy Paige (Frances Dale) and Martin Hill (Hobart Cavanaugh), whom Carr suspects is the culprit mostly by shouting at everyone.

Dr Crabtree has a more cerebral approach and we see a nice bit of detective work, this culminates in the murders being solved, and there is a rather nice twist here.

One of the better entries in the series of crime short features, this has a nice straight forward story that has room to breathe even in the reduced running time.

Touch and Die (1992)

A complicated if not very exciting thriller.

Frank Magenta (Martin Sheen) is a investigative reporter who is looking into the candidacy of presidential hopeful Scanzano (David Birney). Scanzano is doing well in the polls but is running out of money.

Magenta discovers that stolen plutonium is being used to raise funds for the campaign, a deadly conspiracy which leaves a trail of dead bodies behind (some due to radiation poisoning and other quicker methods). Magenta and his family including his daughter Emma (Renée Estevez) are also in the firing line...

This is a long drawn out TV movie and could have done with some editing. The story is fine and certainly well travelled taking in Rome, Paris, NY and ..er.. Africa. The story is interesting but too long winded to maintain much level of excitement.

Detective Kitty O'Day (1944)

A bright and breezy crime drama, played for laughs with some fine charismatic characters.

Kitty (Jean Parker) works for a business man who is making a sudden trip to Boston, which means she must miss her date with Johnny (Peter Cookson). However, when she goes to her boss' house she finds him dead!

His wife Mrs Wentworth (Veda Ann Borg) is a suspect of Kitty, who is off in amateur detective mode immediately, as she prefers to spend time with her fancy man. Inspector Clancy (Tim Ryan) suspects Kitty and Johnny as they always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Plus they always seem to be around when another dead body is discovered...

This is a great film, made by Jean Parker's energetic and feisty character and her battle of wits with the police. Her acid scenes with Mrs Wentworth (who is obviously not a fan) are delicious. Fast moving and a lot of fun.

Sky Riders (1976)

A perfectly fine action romp, the most novel feature being the use of hang gliders.

Terrorists kidnap the family (including Susanna York) of industrialist Jonas Bracken (Robert Culp). They are demanding a heavy price for the family's return. Meanwhile, Mrs Bracken's ex Jim McCabe (James Coburn) - the father of her son - is also alerted.

When he sees that the police investigation led by Inspector Nikolidis (Charles Aznavour) seems to be going nowhere fast, and the police want the terrorists dead more than the hostages released alive, he decides he must go into action himself. He discovers that the terrorists are using an abandoned monastery and concocts a plan using a group of hang gliding dare devils to silently swoop in and make a rescue. The police, however, are not quite as inept as he thinks and they are also moving in...

This is a good film with a straight forward plot which leads up to an extended gun fight. The terrorists are fairly dumb though put up a good fight. The hang gliding scenes in the Greek mountains are pretty spectacular. It isn't world beating but it does the job.

Buy and Cell (1988)

Our 1,500th review!

A zany, maybe sometimes a little too weird, comedy set in the world of high finance and other crime.

Herbie (Robert Carradine) is set up to be the fall guy by his boss. Now in prison for fraud, he finds himself sharing a cell with the somewhat deranged Sly (Michael Winslow) and threatened by the various prison hard men including Cowboy (Roddy Piper). He is also abused by the Warden (Malcolm McDowell) who wants to use Herbie's skills to make himself rich...

Herbie's only way out is to use his skills in high finance and make the convicts rich. He also has a plan to bring down the Warden and his crooked former bosses...

This is a rather crazy film, the prison filled full of bizarre characters, sometimes a bit predictable. It is an enjoyable film with plenty of high points though at times it does veer over the thin line between zany into annoying. Michael Winslow reprises his sound effect gimmick from Police Academy though this treasure could have been made a lot more of.

Dr. Morelle (1949)

If you can get past the rather condescending lead then this is a good crime mystery.

The niece of Kimber (Phillip Leaver), a wheel chair bound and irritable old man who lives in a country mansion, is sole heir to a fortune. However, Cynthia (Jean Lodge) is more interested in her beau Peter (Peter Lorimer), of whom Kimber disapproves. Cynthia vanishes without a trace, leaving Kimber the beneficiary. Cynthia's school friend Miss Frayle (Julia Lang), who works for the detective Dr Morelle (Valentine Dyall), decides to go looking for Cynthia herself and takes up a job at Kimber's house. She discovers some mysterious and potentially deadly goings on and calls in Dr Morelle...

This isn't that bad a film though can drag a bit at times. Dr Morelle treats Miss Frayle rather terribly which makes it hard to warm to his character. The twists at the end are good, but getting there can take some work. Dr Morelle was a long running character in BBC radio dramas though only made it to the silver screen this one time.

The Flim-Flam Man (1967)

An amiable comedy romp about con-men on the road.

Curley (Michael Sarrazin) is an Army deserter on the run from the MPs. He meets Mordecai (George C Scott) on a railway box car and discovers he is a con-man or flim flam man. The pair team up to con various towns folk out of their cash.

However, the Sheriff (Harry Morgan) is hot on their trail, they team up with rich girl Bonnie (Sue Lyon) - Bonnie falling in love with Curley - to keep ahead of the Sheriff...

A decent film with two charismatic leads who work well together. The story can meander at times but the settings and light feel make this a fairly enjoyable film. The confidence tricks of Mordecai and how he executes them is very interesting. Not amazing but enough to be of interest.

The Spider (1931)

An early 1930s murder mystery that takes place in the strange world of magicians and hypnosis. What tremendous fun!

Chatrand the Great (Edmund Lowe) is a famous magician. He is assisted by Alexander (Howard Phillips), whom he said he met some time ago and is suffering from amnesia. Beverley (Lois Moran) attends the show on the off chance that Alexander is her missing brother though her uncle, the financier, John Carrington (Earle Foxe) thinks it is all a load of nonsense. At the show Carrington is shot dead in the middle of Chatrand's act! Beverley discovers that Alexander is her brother Paul but not until Alexander/Paul becomes the prime suspect in Carrington's murder!

This is a great film with a host of amusing cameos including from some members of the Our Gang group. The mysticism of Chatrand is played for laughs, as are the bumbling police. Lowe steals the show with his charismatic performance. The story itself is a bit predictable and the plot a bit thin but the film looks superb and there is a decent twist.

1984 (1984)

A superb adaptation of the George Orwell classic tale.

It is 1984 and the world is now a dark dystopia of authoritarian rule by Big Brother, who uses disinformation and lies to control the population (with brutal security forces as well if all else fails). Winston Smith (John Hurt) is a low-level party operative whose job is to literally rewrite history to present the reality Big Brother wants, and to be happily consumed by the brain washed population. Smith however, is not a true believer and writes subversive thoughts in his diary.

He meets and falls in love with Julia (Suzanna Hamilton), another party operative who also wants something more than Big Brother will allow. They begin a secret (and illegal) love affair. Winston is contacted by a higher up party official (Richard Burton) who appears to be part of an underground movement. However, once again all is not what it seems and the secret double life of Smith and Julia soon comes crashing down...

The world building here is top notch, the world of Big Brother is dark and terrifying (especially the torture scenes) and also a warning to us all. A very good film. This was Richard Burton's final film before his death.
